Moya Buddha Statues on Mt.Yaowang

The Moya Buddha statues on west side of Mt.Yaowang is one of the famous outdoor attractions in Tibet. As thousands of Buddha statues were carved on the mountain, it is also called 1,000-Buddha-Statue Cliff (Qianfo Xiang).

It is said that the earlist Buddha statues were carved in the era of Songtsan Gambo in 7th century. According to Tibetan Kings wrote by the 5th Dalailama:Once Songtsan Gambo came to Mt.Hong and caught sight of the six-word truth appearing naturally in the mountain, he immediately bathed and cleaned his body, then praied silently.Subsequently, he saw in the shining six-word truth the Guanyin Bodhisattva, Dumu, Buddha's warrior attendant with horse head and other Buddha statues, and then, he had the Buddha statues and six-word truth carved on the mountain.

From then on, people ceaselessly carved all kinds of Buddha statues on the mountain, up to the present, Tibetans are still carving Buddha statues on the mountain.

There are numerous Ma'nhydui--the stone piles left by palmers--before Thousands of Buddha Statue Cliff. A great number of palmers will come here everyday to worship Buddha statues.
